Cindy Sherman made her name with Untitled Film Stills, a series of conceptual self-portraits in which the artist used wigs, make-up and costumes to transform herself into filmic characters. A hitchhiker waiting by the side of an empty road, a film noir blonde and a suspicious woman flicking through someone elses post all featured in the 69-image project.
So its pretty brilliant that MAC, the masters of transformation through make-up, would approach Sherman to create a limited edition cosmetic collectionand more than a little bit brave, too.
Sherman used MAC products to create three different characters: off-kilter Hitchcock heroine, Park Avenue Plastic Surgery Maven and Fresh Corpse (a clown). Its a mix of existing and new products, all launching under the Cindy Sherman for MAC banner in October.
We're living in a time when people of all persuasions have become bolder than ever about the ways they choose to express themselves: with a colourful palette of possibilities, You are the Artist, You are your own Subject, and no matter how fearfully you begin, you become fearless in the process, the collection press release reads.
The collaboration is the latest in a long line of adventurous pairings initiated by the makeup group. MAC has worked with Hello Kitty, Wonder Woman and Barbie. But we think Sherman might just be their most audacious partner yet.
