Atkins Diet

For years we have been told fat makes you fat, until Dr. Atkins came along, that is, and preached his findings on carbohydrates - in a nutshell, that over-eating carbohydrates causes increased hunger and an excess of sugar (insulin) in the body that is then stored as fat. The aim of the diet is to re-educate the masses and show that addictive sugar, mostly found in modern processed foods, is a greater enemy than protein and fat. By limiting carbohydrate intake to 20 grams in the first two weeks while proteins are encouraged, and then as you progress through the phases you add 5grams of carbohydrate to your daily intake which could add up to 60-90 grams during the maintenance phase (most of which will come from vegetables rather than a pizza or chips and compares to the average intake of 250 grams of carbohydrates per day), the body is starved of sugar and starts to burn its own fat for energy. There are four phases to the diet: Induction, Ongoing Weight Loss, Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance. By the fourth phase you will have found out how many carbohydrates you can eat without piling the pounds back on.

Initial weight loss is immediate and fast. You can eat fatty, tasty foods like cheese and meat which are normally a no-no on other diets. Lots of protein suppresses your appetite and it’s easy to follow - you just cut out the carbs.

Sugar cravings can be unbearable and the lack of texture in food monotonous. High fat consumption can lead to fatigue and nausea, even leading to an increased risk of heart disease. Some health experts believe this diet is too extreme and can cause severe health problems. Click here for an Atkins expose.
