Since we last spoke to Jessie J at Run To The Beat, she's released her high-intensity workout on the N+TC App. We had a chat with her at the launch, to see what motivates her to work out, and find out what's on her running playlist.

Q. What’s your running/workout mantra?

A. I’m not running as much, I’m doing a lot more cross-training stuff because of my ankle [Jessie injured her ankle in 2011]. I’ve got to be careful at the moment. But honestly, it’s just freedom, strength and getting rid of negative energy in your mind. Working out and running really clears my head.

Q. What would the theme tune to your life be?

A. It sounds a bit up myself, but I’d say Thunder at the moment, like everything that song says is kind of where I’m at in my life, right now.

Q. Where do you love to run or train the most?

A. Anywhere where there’s water, and ducks, and wildlife – anywhere with open spaces where I can’t see where it ends. I like to run in Richmond Park, Bushy Park, along the Thames, anywhere there’s space.

Q. What do you eat before you train?

A. Protein shakes. Protein with kale, beetroot, banana, anything that’s there. But not nuts, because I would die. [Jessie has a nut allergy.]

Q. What beauty products are in your gym bag?

A. Dior Face Hydrate is the most amazing cream ever, I use it twice a day – it says to take it off, but I don’t. Last night I covered my whole face in Oilatum. Nivea Pearl Roll-On and Impulse Tease are my deodorants, and I carry a pack of baby wipes everywhere, that’s my nickname, Baby Wipe.

Q. What’s your training uniform?

A. Nike! High-waisted stuff, little crop tops and Flyknits – I like to see my progress. I never thought I’d be someone who’d wear neons either – I never wanted anyone to notice me when exercising. That’s changed now.

Q. Do you prefer to train by yourself or with others?

A. It depends what mood I’m in. If I want a good work out, I go on my own. I work out better on my own than with a trainer, because I push myself more. But on tour it was really fun – the band and Holly my best friend and Alicia my hairdresser would meet up in the gym.

Q. What songs are on your training playlist – do you have any power songs?

A. I listen to a lot of Rihanna. I listen to Sean Paul – that’s really sad isn’t it? Jay Z, Beyoncé – anything tempo. I’ll listen to Birdy after I’ve worked out when I’m having a bath – but when I work out, I want power. I don’t listen to myself, a lot of people ask me that.

Q. How does it feel to have your own N+TC drill pack on the app?

A. I feel really proud of it – I love the fact that I can share what I don’t always find easy and haven’t always enjoyed, and I can give this back as a gift to others who have felt the same.

Q. What are your favourite exercises?

A. I run for about 20 minutes, then cross trainer for 10 minutes (without lifting my feet, so it really hurts my bum and the back of my legs). Then I’ll do arms. I love working out my arms – because I’ve seen the change the most on my arms the quickest. I also love doing sit-ups, squats, lunges.

Q. How long can you hold a squat?

A. Ages. If I’m on stage I don’t even think about it, I’ll just sing Do It Like A Dude in a squat position.

Q. What does your N+TC drill pack focus on?

A. It’s mainly focused on bums and legs, and it’s intense.

Q. How does training make you feel?

A. Tired and achy, but good – like I’ve achieved something. It makes me feel like I’m doing something out of my comfort zone, and I love that. I started doing videos [on Instagram] because people didn’t believe that I was working out. There’s a few where I’m doing jumps on a cross rope and I’ve clearly given up because I’m tired, but I think it’s important for my fans to realise that staying in shape takes work. That’s why I did this app – there’s no ‘magic thing’. It really is just eating and exercising well. You can’t just binge drink and eat junk food and not work out.
