If weight training appeals but the testosterone-fuelled gym floor doesn’t – try Virgin Active’s new classes The Grid.

Babies move their bodies in ways that many of us adults can’t. Toddlers squat down, touch their toes and sit cross-legged with ease but as we age our flexibility, in particular, gets worse. Virgin’s new concept is about regaining our functional movement. Based on the six primal movements – twist, pull, lift, bend, squat and lunge - you choose from one of four 30-minute classes (depending on your personal goals).

Each class takes place in a gridded area of the gym where you tackle a high intensity workout with obstacles and equipment including dumbbells, TRX and Plyo boxes. Choose from Grid Fit to improve cardiovascular, Grid Lean to torch fat, Grid Strong for muscle gains and Grid Active if you’re training for an obstacle race like Tough Mudder. I've tried them all and each one is tough in its own way, but the circuit format of the classes means you're not doing any one exercise for too long (I'm talking to you burpees). And each is just half an hour, so I figure go hard or go home, right!? (Don't go home...)

What You Need: gym kit and a good pair of trainers.
