‘I'm not one of those people who naturally wants to get up, go to the gym every morning and then drink a green kale juice.’ Jessie J, we hear you.
However, on Sunday 8 September in Greenwich, Team ELLE joined the 19,000 strong crowd of runners completing Nike’s music half marathon Run to the Beat. Way more fun than a go on the treadmill, we assure you.
‘I have so much admiration for runners,' said Jessie J, following her crowd-pleasing, super-charged half hour headline performance that rang in the post-race celebrations. ‘I don’t run. Anything that high impact is a bit of a problem for me because of the ankle surgery I had. Come to think of it, why did I just do all those jumping jacks on stage?’
Jessie may not be a fan of the gym but on stage is where she gets her workout. So if her exercise routine was more conventional, what would be the first song on her playlist? ‘Tinie Tempah’s Pass Out. It makes me think about getting super sweaty and being really energetic.’
Jessie’s hair transformations are a thing to behold, so we had to ask how she’s finding it now she can’t whip her hair back and forth? ‘I love my short hair! I’m actually calling this current style Mr Whippy. Because I look like an ice cream cone...’
Speaking of all things well, creamy – Jessie also revealed her beauty essentials: ‘I love Jo Malone’s Pomegranate Noir body lotion and Dior’s Hydra Life moisturiser. I’ve been using it for four years.’
For her Run to the Beat performance, Jessie wore a specially made top and shorts by Nike. ‘I have nearly everything I wear on stage altered so it’s unique. No one can wear it like I wear it. And when it comes to trainers I’m a Nike girl - AirMax all the way,’ she said, indicating the trainers that match her luminous orange manicure.
So, can we expect a Jessie J fashion collection anytime soon? A line of catsuits, perhaps? ‘I have a massive archive of all the outfits I’ve worn. I loved the black catsuit I wore in the Price Tag video, and the asymmetric catsuit by Vivienne Westwood that I wore for the Olympics Closing Ceremony was unforgettable.’
‘I’m very creative. I’d like to do a perfume line and fashion collaborations but for now, my main focus is music - there are so many people I’d love to collaborate with in the music industry, everyone from Birdy to Beyoncé. But essentially, me and my team are already running a marathon here; it’s not a light jog. I’m pouring all my energy into music at the moment.’
