On Friday 6th March, Gemma Carter will attempt to become the fastest female to complete 50 km on a treadmill. Having completed a 50 km event myself in October 2014, I do not envy Gemma this challenge! Aged 28, Gemma is a qualified running coach, has run in excess of 20 marathons and competed in races of 40 to 100 mile distances. When she was 23, she completed her first ultramarathon and was the first female to finish.

Other women have attempted the 50 km treadmill challenge but no one, as yet, has got the official Guinness World Record time. Therefore, the unofficial time to beat is 4:00:00. Could you imagine running on a treadmill at high intensity for four hours, staring at a blank wall? She will need to average over 12.5km per hour if she is to break the 4-hour mark.

CHHP, The Centre for Health and Human Performance at 76 Harley Street, who have been supporting Gemma to fulfil her challenge, welcome donations to Comic Relief so that you too can show your support for Gemma and Comic Relief:
