ELLE talks health with Rosemary Ferguson

Can you party and be healthy?

ELLE met with Rosemary Ferguson, a model who at 18 was catwalks and featuring in advertising campaigns for the likes of Chanel, Versace, Dolce & Gabanna and Miu Miu.

After realising many of the common ailments we all suffer - sluggishness, stress and skin complaints - could be improved with food Ferguson spent years experimenting with different health regimes on herself and her family. Finally, the model took the plunge and studied to be a naturopathic nutritionist.

We caught up with Kate Moss' pal to talk health, fitness and the supplements you should be taking...

Why did you decide to train in nutrition?

It’s something I’ve always been interested in, and my family, my stepdad’s a homeopath and my gran owned a health food store. I’ve always eaten really healthy food and I just love the wonderful things you can do with supplements. It just grew and grew until I decided I wanted to give up some time and go and learn about it. I’m really passionate about it.

Are you very strict about your diet?

I’m quite careful about what I eat but I’m not really strict because I’m just not like that. I like to go and have fun and I like to try different foods. If I’m away somewhere and there’s something really rich on the menu I’ll have it. I don’t think restricting yourself is a good thing to do. Obviously I follow a very healthy diet but I think you have to feed your soul too so as long as you’re not having steak three times a week it’s ok. I’m probably not that healthy at all but I know a lot about how to be!

If I was to ask you how to get healthy what are the three things you’d tell me to do first?

Drink more water, eat more fruit, eat more veg. Those are the top three. It’s not mysterious to get healthy, it’s really easy.

Do you exercise?

I do yoga once a week and I train once a week and I ride a horse. I’ve always done quite a lot of exercise, I probably do less now than I used to. It’s all I have time for.

What are the supplements you swear by?

I’ll tell you what I take but it’s different for different people so I’d never say everyone should take this. A good Vitamin B is really important because it’s good for your nerves, good for stress. Vitamin C is a constant. Magnesium’s really good if you can’t sleep. And Vitamin D. This whole country should take Vitamin D in the winter, that I can say categorically, because we don’t get enough sun.
