The London Marathon Countdown: 5 days to go

Get kit savvy

Okay, by this point you should have sorted out which trainers you will be wearing on Sunday, having trained in them for the past few months. I had a mini breakdown a few weeks ago because I had been doing all my training in my Nike Free 5.0 shoes that I LOVE but realised they were not supportive enough for a marathon so I spent the past weeks panic running to decide on another pair. With that now sorted I've been looking to the rest of my kit and what I will cherry pick for the day.

Your longest training runs should have revealed to you which pieces of kit work and which chaffe you in places you would rather they didn't... You'll have an idea of which socks you like and whether you need a bum bag or an armband for your phone.

My kit pictured includes:

The brightest dri-fit T-shirt I could find so my friends and family can spot me in the crowd. I've had my name put on mine, this means even strangers can cheer you on. My boyfriend teased me that it was vain until we went to collect my 'vanity project' and saw it in a massive pile with others. It's common place to see people at the start line with their names on their vests and it really will help you in your darkest moments.

Twin Skin socks. I can not recommend these enough - if you don't already have a pair buy some. You don't need to train in them to know that the two fine layers of sock will rub together rather than rub at your skin. I've never had a blister wearing these.

A bum bag. Good tip here, get all your bits and pieces you need for race day (more on this tomorrow) and try to fit them all in your bum bag. I already had one that was too small but a quick pit-stop at Sports Direct sorted me out with this bum bag that is big enough to house my stuff but not too big it will be a nuisance. (Note to self: must still pack light-ish).

I wore a pair of leggings during a recent long run and they chaffed, so I am reverting to my trusty old pair. I haven't tested them out over 26.2 miles but they're likely to get me a good deal of the way without too much bother. Same for my sports bra by Sweaty Betty that I wore on my 18 mile training run.

Having never run with a cap or sunglasses I'm not about to start now, but if you've practised with these take them along if it is likely to be sunny.

Tonight: layout your kit so it is ready to go and assess whether you need any last minute additions.

Check in tomorrow for every possible aid you may need during the 26.2 miles...
