Having successfully survived Storm Dennis without being blown away or totally soaked, now might not seem like the time to whip out your party make-up and work a statement metallic eye. But, you'd be wrong, if London Fashion Week AW20 is anything to go by.
Officially replacing our glitter addiction of 2019, fragmented foil make-up is the backstage beauty trend that's a little bit extra, and a whole lot luxe.
Forever the king of wildly imaginative make-up, Thomas de Kluyver created a trio of coloured foil eye looks for Simone Rocha AW20. 'The collection was inspired by the artist Dorothy Cross who works a lot with items found on the shore, so I wanted to incorporate that into the make-up,' de Kluyver told ELLE backstage. 'I'm applying gloss onto the eyes then pressing on coloured foil in abstract shapes. I want it to feel organic and expressive - the make-up is an accessory in place of earrings.
Elsewhere at Erdem, the ethereal embellishment continued courtesy of silver leaf make-up inspired by Cecil Beaton's photography.
'The make-up is an homage to one of Cecil Beaton's work called "A Symphony In Silver",' explained NARS make-up artist Lynsey Alexander backstage. 'I'm using art shop silver leaf on the eyes to create a delicate and otherworldly look. First I'm applying some Egyptian Magic cream then placing the sheet of silver leaf on top and brushing off to it breaks up. It's this sort of shatter effect.'
Departing from the more conteporary artistic inspiration of Erdem and Simone Rocha, MAC make-up artist Sam Bryant's gold leaf look for Preen was an ode to Renaissance sculptures.
'The inspiration for the look is Venetian churches and statues of the Virgin Mary,' Bryant told ELLE. 'I'm placing gold leaf across the forehead and down the sides of the face to mimic the shape of a nun's habit, or those medieval hairbands. Once it's on I'm using a clean mascara wand to break it up so it has a more antique feel.'
