Hyaluronic acid, salicylic acid, clay, niacinamide...they're the types of ingredients that make up all of our favourite skincare products, from serums to masks and moisturisers.

But what if we told you that they can also work wonders on your scalp?

The hair industry is currently taking inspiration from the skincare sphere, with face-saving brands like Drunk Elephant, Elemis and Dr Barbara Sturm, to name but a few, formulating shampoos, serums and masks with ingredients they'd usually have you slathering on your face. And with very good reason...

Why Does Your Scalp Need Skincare?

Because, even though we focus on the hair growing out of it, it's well... made of skin. ‘Like the skin elsewhere it can become clogged and dull’, says hairdresser Michael Van Clarke. ‘Even more so if an excess of harsh hair products are used. Often not designed for skin, these products seep down, build up and easily clog the hair follicles. Combined with poor diet and lack of exercise it can lead to some chronic scalp and hair conditions.’

Traditional skincare can't be used on the scalp as the skin there is sensitive in different ways, but it's important not to forget it altogether. It gets a battering from product build up, heat from styling tools and external factors like sunlight (hands up if you've burnt your scalp on holiday?).

What Can Cause Scalp Issues?

A whole host of things, some sadly out of your control.

'The scalp has an abundance of hair that can create the perfect conditions to develop issues with a build-up of oil and bacteria', says Lorraine Turvey, Member of the Institute of Trichologists. 'During hormonal changes the androgens increase the size of the sebaceous glands, producing more sebum. Things like scalp acne can be linked in some cases to an increase in free fatty acids, fizzy drinks consumption, fluid retention or working in environments that produce hot oily conditions or heavy use of cosmetics particularly on the hairline where they can build up.'

Anabel Kingsley, Consultant Trichologist & Brand President at Philip Kingsley, adds that stress, the weather, infrequent hair washing, and a poor diet can add to scalp issues. And of course, like many other ailments, some people are just more susceptible to a flaky or sensitive scalp than others.

What Types Of Scalp Products Should I Be Using?

Just like in traditional skincare, there are many different formulas and applications that can be found when it comes to taking care of your scalp. What you choose really depends on your needs, time, and preferences...

1.Scalp Shampoos

An easy place to start, a scalp shampoo should do two things: clear the build-up of products and grime on your scalp (without stripping it, like some high-street 'dandruff' shampoos are known to do) and then nourish the skin.

'It is very important to cleanse your scalp regularly to remove excess oils and dead skin cells', says Anabel. 'If you suffer from an irritated scalp, use a daily soothing anti-microbial shampoo and a daily astringent. Good ingredients to look for are Witch Hazel (an astringent), Piroctone Olamine (anti-bacterial) and Camphor (soothing).'

2. Scalp Scrubs

A scalp scrub is a great choice if you want to give a deeper cleanse of product build-up, a slough away any flakiness. Just make sure the scrub is specifically formulated for the scalp, as it will be a fine texture - anything abrasive will just cause more issues.
