While fashion brands are continually bracing themselves to keep up with the mega 'Meghan Markle effect', here's proof that the Duchess of Cambridge still packs a very real punch when it comes to impact on retail sales.

Superdrug has just announced that sales of hairnets – yes, hairnets – are up almost 40 percent thanks to Kate.

While you may associate them with your school dinner ladies, since the duchess debuted hers during various London appearances and her recent tours of Sweden and Norway, people have been reminded of the merits of this up-do accessory.

Essentially, the mesh hairnet stealthily keeps your style under control, minimising frizz and flyaways as well as providing good grip for bobby pins.

Of the increase in popularity, Superdrug's head of beauty Meg Potter said: 'To hear a humble hairnet is the secret to keeping the duchess' up-dos in place and looking sleek is a far cry from all the usual high-end gadgets and beauty lovers have rushed out to pick up hairnets in a bid to recreate these fabulous looks.'

Who'd have thought it?
