There's always room for Hollywood waves and shiny, bouncy blowdries but this year, why not experiment with something a little more fun and exciting for your next Christmas party?

Designers and hairstylists went all out this season, serving us a treasure trove of hair inspo hitting the runway. With a bit of courage and creativity, basic, everyday styles such as the messy bun, plaits and ponytails turn into statement looks. Giambattista Valli paired a low pony with ultra-glam 1920s finger waves while easy bobs were given a modern spin with a sleek finish and flicked out ends.

Elsewhere, expect plenty of light-catching accessories (a party season must-have) and braids of every manner. We went straight to the pros for insider tips and tricks to DIY-ing the looks on your next night out. Christmas hair, sorted!

The Pro Guide To Christmas Party Hair

1. Flapper Fancies

Finger waves are back in a big way with celebrities such as Zendaya and Saweetie embracing the retro trend. Done well, the 1920s finger waves are the perfect party 'do for 2022. 'The best way to avoid the fancy dress look is by choosing the right outfit and accessories carefully, as well as adjusting the finish of your hair to the occasion,' says Valentina Ingrosso, creative director at Neil Moodie Studio. She recommends swapping a wet-look gel for a shiny pomade for a modern feel.

'Pick a gel or pomade that is workable and one that doesn't dry too quickly so you can work on the hair and adjust as needed,' says Ingrosso, who also suggests having a narrow-toothed comb and quality holding clips to hold the hair in place after each wave is created.

2. Sleek Flicks

Flicked ends are 'a re-invention of a 1960’s hairstyle, mixed with the latest Nineties inspired fashions,' says hairstylist Neil Moodie.

'This look works on almost any hair length and is very versatile as it's less coiffed than the original 1960’s vibe, and less "bouffant" on the crown,' says Moodie. 'It's modernised by being flatter and smoother, with the flicks giving the style more energy and movement.'

To DIY, Moodie recommends blow-drying with a light mousse and a round brush to flick the ends upwards before adding some texture spray for a nonchalant feel. A curling or straightening iron will help create a stronger flick. Leave the backcombing and stiff hairsprays in the 1960s.

3. Be Jewelled

Why should your outfit have all the fun? Adorn your partings and braids with glitzy crystals for a truly showstopping look. It's a high-impact, low-effort style that we can all get behind. Hairstylist Hollie Rose Clarke is a fan of pressing on adhesive rhinestones onto your parting and going 'a little OTT' especially for party season.

If accessories are more your bag, try a rhinestone-encrusted headband or pile on the hair slides. More is more, just make sure your hairstyle is kept simple (they a low pony or a beachy blowout) to avoid looking twee.

4. Chic Chignons

Upgrade your updo by weaving in a bow-embellished braid as seen at Brandon Maxwell ,or give it some texture to keep it from veering into prim and bridal territory.

Alternatively, jazz up a simple ballerina bun with accessories. 'By adding some sparkle you can take the style from professional to party with that wow factor,' says Clarke. There's a plethora of embellishments to choose from, be it bejewelled bows, sparkly hair pins, glitter sprays or dreamy hair rhinestones.

5. Fairytale Braids

Elevate the basic three-strand schoolgirl plait to new heights with multiple braids in varying widths and accessories fit for a (party) princess. 'This season sees more ethereal braids with a nod to Tim Burton’s (fantasy) world,' says Babyliss ambassador and session stylist, Syd Hayes. If your hair is straight, add some waves (Babyliss 9000 Cordless Waver will do the trick) before braiding and employ a texture spray so the finish looks soft and lived-in.
