If you haven’t heard her name then you’ll definitely have seen her work. After all, Jen Atkin is the woman behind the hairstyles of everyone from from Chrissy Teigen to Bella Hadid and every single one of the Kardashian/Jenner sister clan. Basically what this woman can’t do with a pair of scissors and a curling wand just isn’t worth knowing.
We caught up with Jen ahead of the launch for her new hair extensions range for Beauty Works to chat career highlights, Snapchat style and Hollywood hair.
‘I work with lots of women who are really good examples of playing around with your look. I love that Kylie (Jenner) and Khloe (Kardashian) are both such chameleons, they’re so daring and brave and always playing around with their style. And Chrissy Teigen talks about changing her hair with extensions all the time!’
‘I think extensions had such a bad rep when they first came out ten years ago. I actually used to do them for Lindsey Lohan, Mischa Barton and Nicole Richie back in the day but they were not the best quality compared to what’s on offer now.’
‘She will ask for my effortless waves a lot, which is what we started off doing but we also mix it up a lot. Kim’s really good at knowing what works for her. I mean, she sets such trends - like for Christmas Eve this year we did these double braids and it just took off. Now I’m seeing them everywhere.’
‘I would say working with John Galliano in Paris and also coming out with my own product line Ouai. That’s been a major step for me.’
‘It’s on Sephora.com now so you can get it shipped to the UK and it will also be launching here very soon. I just wanted to create a cool, luxury brand that’s accessible and affordable. I don’t want it to be snooty.’
‘There’s a quote by Serge Normant, which I have taped up at my station in the salon that says, ‘don’t be jealous of your peers, be inspired by them.’ It’s one of my favourite quotes of all time.’
‘The Ouai texturizing hairspray. Oh and hair extensions! Can I have two? Because when you wear extensions your hair always looks great even if you don’t have product in it. I love all of the ones in my new collection for Beauty Works.’
‘It would have to be Glossier balm dotcom.’
‘My Ouai treatment mask - it basically makes your hair virgin again. It’s so good, especially if you have deep damage – it’s epic!’
