Naturally, I have thick, frizzy and totally untameable hair.
It takes me at least two and a half hours to wash, dry and style (so impromptu nights out are always out of the question), combs break Princess Diaries-style when I try to brush any knots out, and it expands at the tiniest drop of moisture - not good when the weather is this temperamental.
Enter the KeraStraight hair treatment.
As a beauty writer, I'm always sceptical about products and treatments that claim to 'repair' hair, let alone totally transform it - but boy does this deliver.
What Is KeraStraight And How Does It Work?
Put simply, KeraStraight harnesses proteins (largely a huge dose of keratin, sometimes found inside shampoos and serums) as well as amino acids which disrupt the hair's natural curl pattern, smoothing, reinforcing and straightening in the process.
I chose Covent Garden's Trevor Sorbie salon for my hair-over, and after a wash and condition, hairstylist Ben slathered my lengths with the keratin-packed treatment from root to tip. It felt exactly like hair dye, just without the offensive smell.
I sat in the chair for 25 minutes while the formula worked its magic on my mane and then it was carefully and painstakingly blow-dried into my hair. After another rinse and rough-dry, Ben straightened my hair like I would normally at home, but with a pair of KeraStraight irons complete with tourmaline technology to really seal in the keratin-infused goodness.
Gone are the days when you'd have to keep the greasy formula on your hair for 24 hours - this is a same-day treatment and totally worthy of game-changer status.
Is KeraStraight Worth It?
One word: YES and the above is picture evidence.
Right now, my once over-worked hair feels hydrated like never before, every single split end and brittle strand is fortified and that halo of unsightly frizz I battled with every day is gone.
In its place is a silk-like feel that I simply can't get enough of, a glossy shine to rival a Herbal Essences model, and more importantly, I've been given my time back.
Before, I lived in a constant state of hair envy and would be lying if I said I hadn't thought about trading my own mum for Kim Kardashian's ultra-glossy locks. Now, I no longer have to set aside a whole evening to wash my hair, set my alarm for 5:30 to straighten it or risk burning my scalp (yes, that's happened more times than I care to remember #thickhairproblems) all after letting loose with a hair-dryer for at least an hour.
I can simply wash and go without giving it a second thought and I've kicked my trusty straighteners to the kerb (once upon a time the only thing I'd have saved in a fire) as it's perfectly smooth and straight already - and I'm talking poker.
Even if I leave it to air dry, step out into torrential rain or brave humid weather, it'll stay that way for months on end.YAS.
To say I'm impressed would be the understatement of the century. I rave about my new, improved hair to anyone who will listen and have made more or less everyone I know run their fingers through it. I've drawn the line at strangers on the tube, though. That would be weird.
Sounds Pretty Impressive - But Is It Safe?
Keratin treatments have made headlines in the past years for harnessing formaldehyde to give lengths that dead-straight look, but KeraStraight doesn't, which makes it completely safe for both the hairdresser and the client.
My only bugbear? My hair smelt a little bit metallic for a little while afterwards - but that's because I chose not to wash it. If you've got the time, you can actually give it a shampoo just half an hour after the treatment is done.
How Long Does KeraStraight Take And How Much Does It Cost?
It's not something you'll be able to fit it into your lunch-break.
Depending on the length and thickness of your hair, you can expect to sit in the salon chair for around two to three hours, and even though that may sound like a bit of a drag, it's definitely worth it for that supermodel-sleek look and cashmere feel every single day.
Also, something as life-changing as KeraStraight doesn't come cheap. You'll most likely pay anything from £150 upwards, depending on the salon you book your appointment with, so do your research if you're keen to save cash.
As I swished my way out of the salon, a regular client told me that KeraStraight is addictive.
'There's no going back now,' she said, 'You'll be sold for life!'
And do you know what? I think she's right.
