Straight hair reminiscent of the Nineties club scene is back, but it moves to a 21st-century beat. Keep it lowkey by straightening front sections away from the face, adding serum for shine without weight. Here, ghd global ambassador Zoe Irwin used ghd Max Styler and Straight On Spray.

The Nineties wasn’t all about linear, straight strands. ‘Inspired by Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, this was pure TLC,’ says Zoe, who whipped up the iconic rope twist braid after smooth-drying. ‘To bring it up to date, give it high shine – run ends through the ghd Max Stylers and work in Perfect Ending for 2021 glassiness.’

This is Calvin Klein smooth, circa 1998. Spend time on the blowdry, using a nozzle head to dry hair in sections, giving a polished surface. Finish with hot irons for polish before securing into a ponytail. Zoe used the ghd Max Stylers – with wide plates, they make for light work.

There was a glossiness to textured hair in the Nineties – remember Neneh Cherry? To restore natural movement and high shine, prep with a hydrating product, then work in a shine serum with your fingers as you blowdry. Zoe used ghd Curly Ever After and Bodyguard Heat Protect Spray.

We all saw Mel B, Halle Berry and Björk with Bantu knots in the Nineties; now they’ve got a new informality. After dividing hair into two, and smoothing wtih the ghd Max Styler, wind hair back around itself before securing with pins. Finally, spray ghd Perfect Ending Hairspray onto your fingers to loosen and pull out ends.
