The a/w09 catwalk was the birthplace of hundreds of new beauty looks, but only a handful have become major trends. If you want to bring your hair bang up to date, look no further than ELLEs six new rules of now.
Plaits are an easy way to instantly update your hair for winter. Small braids (at the front or sides) will add edge to your look and nod to the 1990s grunge vibe, while larger plaits are the softer and more classic option this season. Whether it’s backcombed, blown out or crimped, this season’s hair has more texture than before, though it should still have a glossy – not a grungy – heart. Keep hair healthy, soft and groomed, then add texture and grit by using plenty of dry shampoo and texturising spray.Buy this: Rootful Root Lifting Spray, £11.50 by Redken at Look Fantastic and Rub Out Dry Cleanser, £16 by Ojon

If the 1980s look is too edgy for your style, then channel a more grown-up vibe with 1970s inspired full, smooth waves. Invest in large Velcro rollers, or switch your straighteners, which tend to give curls a dented shape, for a curling wand to create a gorgeous, soft look.Buy this: Curling wand, £24.45 by Babyliss at Boots

Minimal effort, but maximum effect, the ‘healthy grunge’ look is the quickest route to sexy, bed-head hair and is a brilliant way to dress down a more formal outfit. The key to this look is salt spray: spritz into damp hair from roots to tips and loosely plait hair or wind it into a bun before blow-drying with a diffuser. Buns were all over the catwalk but the ones piled high on models’ heads looked freshest, seen at Erdem and Louis Vuitton. Simply pile hair up into a ponytail at the crown, gently tease the ponytail with a tail comb to add bulk, then wind the ends round into a loose bun and pin in place. Make sure to pull at odd strands and soflty rub the swept back sides and bun to create a wispy finish.
