Some hair and make-up trends quickly make it from the catwalk to the street and are easily adopted into the mainstream take Louis Vuittons s/s09 top knot for a start. Other, more tricky trends however, make their first off-the-runway appearance on the A-list, translated into a more wearable version by expert celebrity stylists especially for the red carpet. From Diane Krugers sexy take on Diors theatrical catwalk hair, to Poshs version of Fendis retro 1960s style, we take a look a 7 winning celebrity hair styles to inspire you this season
Kate Bosworth always looks polished and chic and we loved her take on the one-sided big barrel curls seen at Alessandro Dell’Acqua’s a/w09 show. Luigi Murenu, Global Creative Consultant at John Frieda, who created the look says, ‘the beauty of this classic look is that it suits all face shapes and hair types, softly framing and flattering the face. Be generous with product as the hair needs to be heavy to be moulded into shape. Apply mousse from root to ends and blow dry until 100% dry. Use heated rollers, winding sections of hair down either side of the head, and one row going backwards from <
Twenty8Twelve’s a/w09 edgy plaits inspired Leigthon Meester, 9 August at the Teen Choice Awards, LA.
At the Teen Choice Awards in LA we loved Leighten Meester’s simple, toned down version of Twenty8Twelve’s grungy plaits. Resident ELLE.TV hair stylist Luke Hersheson says ‘rather than being tough and ‘London’, this hair style has been made more glamorous for the red carpet. Everything is less harsh, the braid isn’t a scalp braid, the quiff is softer and not as high, it is much smoother and glossier. Use Gloss Control, £9.45 by Techni Art to finish the style’.
Donna Karan, A/W 09 inspired Jessica Alba, 15 September at the Narciso Rodriguez S/S 10 show, New York
A simple bun like Jessica's is easy to create at home, but to get the sweeping, draped side parting and hairpin detail 'you have to go see a great hairdresser' explains Eugene Souleiman, who created this look for Donna Karan. If you want to try it at home 'use hair pins as an accessory to decorate the hair, slide the hairpins in at an angle. Do not press them all the way into the hair, so they extend out from the hairshape.''This style will suit any woman that wants something chic and elegant. To get this sleek glasslike look use Wella Crystal Styler, £8.29 and Wella System Professionals Ultimation Hair Spray, £11.79.
Charles Worthington created the dolly bun for Erdem’s a/w09 catwalk – it was then adopted into a softer more playful style by some seriously fashion-forward stars like Chloe Sevigney. ‘Even though this was a dramatic look on the Erdem catwalk, Chloe has softened the dolly bun with more hair around the front. If you are trying this look use a brush – not a comb - to back comb your hair first, this will give you volume and the texture you need for this style. Use a thick hair band to secure a ponytail which will act as a base for the bun to sit on. This look should be playful, not rigid. Rub Charles Worthington Results Max Hold Hairspray, £4.49 onto your fingertips and massage in to bring out the static <
For her 21st birthday party this year in Las Vegas, Rumer Willis went for a chic Grecian plaited updo – like a modern day Helen of Troy. Inspired by Issa’s a/w09 catwalk, she made the look more wearable with wispy side tendrils and a sexy sweeping fringe. Malcolm Edwards, the hair stylist who masterminded the style for Issa told us, ‘this style works best on long hair, first blow dry with volumising spray like Techni.Art Pli, £11.60, and L’Oreal Professional Texture Expert Smooth Essence, £16.25. Once dry slick the hair into a side pony using Techni.Art Fix Design, £9.45, then plait it and wind it around the base, pinning in place as you go, make sure to tuck the ends back under or into the bun to ke<
Christian Dior A/W 09 inspired Diane Kruger, 28 July at the Inglorious Basterds Premiere, Berlin
Adam Reed, Diane's stylist talks Kirby grips, 'It is easy to put Kirby grips into any style and can add interest with out being full on - you can make it as subtle or as statement as you like. For Diane we worked a 40's style wave into the hair as our base and then used the grips to add structure to the style. I sprayed the grips to match Diane's dress so they sat with the overall look. Try this idea of matching the pins to your outfit by using car spray paint - it doesn't crack when you add hairspray. '
The key to getting the look from Fendi right is to backcomb your hair, the style of headband is your choice, just make sure it's wide. If your hair is short like Victoria's tease it up and back with a comb for volume and spritz in place with flexible hold hairspray or if it's longer backcomb with a brush and pull into a low bun or ponytail, finally accessorise with a wide, black headband.Try Miss Selfridge's cut out flower headband, £6 it is almost identical to Victoria's but without the A-List price tag. .Click here to buy it now
