The trickiest part of growing out short hair is the whole damn thing. It's difficult, there's no getting around it (unless you have a particularly amazing hairstylist on hand at all times).
We'll imagine Jennifer does not have one of those and instead look to her for tips on seamlessly reaching a mid-length with elegance and style.

Punk Texture
Still deceptively short-short. For Jennifers sake lets hope its not naturally curly, because this length needs sharp, straight ends. All the better to smooth with styling cream, shake through with fingers and tuft up at all angles. Clean, elegant attitude.

Cheats Hairline
Ah, a masterful technique of lowering the hairline with a false side parting. Just a tiny break in the forward-falling fringe shapes the longer hair but keeps it elfin

The Eye Obscure
So long it's getting in her eyes, but the back is still perfect .It's creeping, but the neat neckline is the bit that's holding up the growth phase, but keeping this longer length nice and tidy. Time to give up Jen and just let it grow.

Super Straight
When all else fails, plaster it to your scalp. Maybe she slept in a doorag (a lycra headscarf that is actually a pretty nifty styling tool), maybe she didn't, but it is a great short cut to creating this sleek style without cooking your new hair in electrical heat.

Short back n sides
Keeping a longer length on top is more feminine, cuter, balanced AND it means the top can keep growing to hide the sides which are harder to grow out gracefully.

Front Cover
Cheat a longer look by blowdrying al your hair forwards. It means it'll flatten the root, sweep over the hairline and create the illusion of a shaggier length. But look! The top and back is still secretly really short

Theres Something About Jennifer
The choppy texture works for this ear-skimming length. Hoping the stiff-quiff is due to a gust of wind rather than anything else...

Side Sweep
The sides are still nicely shaped which means she's not in full grow-out mode yet. The extra long front is the perfect length to sweep over and create a pretty face-framing pixie shag.

The is it or isn't it parting
The hair is going in so many different directions you're not quite sure what you're looking at, but you're also not noticing the gentle puffing out at the sides (this length is tricky). Straight is better for taming it all over, and the subversive parting (is that what we're calling it?) gives it an edgy style.

The Princess Diana
Resolutely ladylike, but most likely drowning in product. Yes this is slightly ageing, but its necessary to tame the all-over volume and give it a style, when trust us, it really looks horrific unattended. Finger dry and ply with styling cream (or even better, mousse before a blowdry). Embrace the volume on top, but keep the back and sides in one strict direction and hope for the best.

Sleek
Theres a reason you've seen more and more straight hair on Jennifer, and its because its infinitely easier to control. Whatever the length, smoothing it over with irons will tackle too much side-volume, keep everything neat, and get maximum length out of your growth.

Pin Curls
This is the time when Jennifer will avoid looking in the mirror until the stylist has been round. Ear-lobe length is particularly tricky as it pouffs out at the sides, the longer top layer is not heavy enough to tame what lies beneath. The trick? Heat styling (hence the sculpted, tousled waves) and lots of pins - notice the ear tuck. LOTS of pins...

Tumble Waves
Aaand relax. You've made it. Long enough at the front to properly tong, and tuck behind your ear with minimal kirby intervention. For a cool evening 'do keep one side sleek like Jennifer to create more of a style, but now is the time you can look forward to the longer lengths without too much angst.
