Trend: The Workwear Bun, seen at Alberta Ferretti
How-to: Using lots of Elnett, from £2.03 (boots.com), a fine toothed comb and a Mason Pearson I misted my hair all over with hairspray and swept it into a side part then wrapped my hair around itself into a tight bun. With some more hairspray spritzed on my fingers I ruffled the front section to loosen it up a little and teased out some baby hairs around my exposed ear.
Verdict: Normally a strict centre parting girl, the side part took a little getting used to, but I loved how it changed my face and made me look more demure. It’s a perfect style for the office and something I could wear with any outfit.

Trend: The Hair Accessory, seen at Louis Vuitton
How-to: This trend requires literally no effort—just do your ‘do, then pull a domino mask (available from any costume shop) onto the top of your head.
Verdict: I tend to treat my hair like a pencil case, storing pens, eyeliners and sunglasses in the nest atop my head for easy, instant access. I also like repurposing pieces meant for other ends—I’ve been known to nick my date’s bow tie and wear it as a headband when the mood strikes, and I’ve learnt that sleep masks make fetching headbands after frizz-inducing long-haul flights. So when Louis Vuitton models capped their fetishy garb with gold domino masks, I knew I’d found my trend. The mask adds extra sparkle and mystique to nighttime looks. Channelling Kate Moss for £5 or less? I’m in…

Trend: The Plait, seen at Lanvin
How-to: I usually wear my hair either loose or in a topknot, whether I’m at work or off-duty. However, this plait is so simple! I didn’t use any styling products I just washed my hair and let it air dry so it had a natural wave, then I split my hair into three even sections, plaited and secured with a bobble.
Verdict: It’s a really sweet look, good for lazy days.

Trend: The Girl/Boy, seen at Dolce & Gabbana
How-to: I selected a part of my hair in the front and teased small sections to build volume. I gently brushed the teased hair out so it formed a smooth quiff. Finally I gathered my hair as I would to tie it up and used pins and hair spray to smoothe out the bumps.
Verdict: I love this look – it’s the perfect work wear look, cool with a sophisticated edge.

Trend: The Pony, seen at Roland Mouret
and Valentino
How-to: I worked through a little Kerastase Volumactive Mousse, £15.25, before rough blow drying my hair to keep some of the natural kinks. I positioned the pony in the middle of the back of my head as seen at Roland Mouret and secured with an elastic. I sprayed L’Oreal Paris Elnett, from £2.03 (boots.com), on to a Mason Pearson natural bristle brush and then ran the brush over the top of my head to smooth any flyaways. I worked KMS Hairplay Soft Wax, £10.80 (feelunique.com), through my pony tail with my fingers to add some more texture and to separate the strands. Lastly, to bring this pony up to date, I took inspiration from the Valentino and Topshop Unique shows and tied black ribbon from John Lewis into a bow around the base of the pony tail.
Verdict: I will definitely wear this look this season. I often wear a ponytail anyway but I love the edition of ribbon.

Trend: The Sixties Style, seen at Bottega Veneta
How-to: For this Sixties beehive the secret is in the prep; you need good foundations. I used Moroccanoil Extra Volume Shampoo, £17.65, and Conditioner, £18.55 (available September), followed by Fekkai Advanced Full Blown Volume mousse, £24, then blow-dried my hair upside down for mega volume. Using a Mason Pearson I back brushed the hair on top of my head and smoothed over to created the beehive shape. Next I twisted the hair in to a chignon and pinned. A spritz of hairspray finished the style.
Verdict: I like it, but it’s a bit too ‘done’ for me.
The Sixties StyleThis autumn/winter there are plenty of hairstyles to tempt. Team ELLE put six new season trends to the test, and instead of calling on the pros we styled each look ourselves, from pretty ponytails to androgynous quiffs. But which one’s for you?
