Some stars are never seen without a face framing fringe (think Zooey Deschanel) while others are less devoted, chopping and changing their hairline to suit their mood.
If you want a hair update a fringe is a quick and easy way to get a whole new look, but you need to know which fringe is right for your face shape. There are rules, you know.
We called on SeanHanna Creative Director Skyler McDonald (who has a fringe herself) to offer up some expert tips.
Here we reveal the four faces shapes and the fringes that suit them best - but we all know rules are there to be broken so we reveal the A-list rule-breakers who luckily got it right too...

‘Side fringes are perfect for adding length and definition to a round face shape. A longer side fringe will create the illusion of a longer face and enhance your cheekbones’ says SeanHanna Creative Director Skyler McDonald.
‘For long fringes, mix it up a little bit by using your straighteners to gently flick the ends of your fringe’ says SeanHanna Creative Director Skyler McDonald.

She has a round face but has gone for a full fringe. SeanHanna Creative Director Skyler McDonald says, ‘Beware of blunt fringes – they are far too harsh for this particular face shape!’
This fringe suits Emma because it isn’t too heavy, the piecey texture is really flattering.

‘If you have a square face, a fringe can be slightly overwhelming,’ says Skyler. ‘Ask for a fringe that finishes slightly below your eyebrows’.

‘If the fringe slightly feathers in the centre, then this will create softness to your face shape. Add some hairspray to keep the thinner sections in place,’ says Skyler.
ELLE’s tip:use a backcombing brush with its tightly-packed bristles to pull the hair taught, using a hairdryer with a nozzle dry your fringe straight.
