The new plaits

No longer the reserve of milkmaids and schoolgirls, plaits were big news on the catwalks this season. 2009's take is grown up and wearable. At PPQ plaits were singular, bold and slightly messy, while at Issa thick rope braids were coiled into a bun positioned at the side of the head in homage to model icon Marie Helvin. ‘This is a classic 70s look’ says hair stylist Malcolm Edwards who created it. ‘You need tons of product to give it grip and keep it tight to the head. It’s the ultimate in poolside glamour.’ To get this look blow dry Pli £11.65, by L’Oreal Professionnel into hair, then saturate with a wet-look serum to finish. Elsewhere, plaits lent an edge to classic styles. At Rodarte and Zac Posen twisted into a simple bun and at Lacroix a dramatic silhouette was updated with cornrows.
