The look: Seamless placement of high and low lights has been important for some time, but this season the technique uses richer tones of both. Look to Olivia Palermo for inspiration.

What to ask for: “Red heads should opt for velvet shades, burgundy hues and rich Aztec coppers. Brunettes should use a combination of colours to add depth – leather browns, hazelnut tones, matte conker and midnight black” explains Christel Lundqvist at HOB Salons.

Best suited to: Anyone who wants to go red

The look: Deep red tones give an instant vintage feel, think Karen Elson, Paloma Faith and Florence Welch. It will add a flash of colour, brightening up dark winter outfits.

What to ask for: Carolyn Newman, Colour Director at Charles Worthington, suggests asking for “many tones of different reds and coppers throughout dark blonde, light brown and brown hair”. Best suited to: Natural blondes and mid-tone brunettes

The look: Chloe’s uber-glamorous, 1970s-inspired show was full of perfectly blow-dried, camel-hued tresses. Think Blake Lively and Kate Hudson on the red carpet.

What to ask for: “A nutty, earthy undertone to add depth” says Ravi, Senior Colour Technician and Stylist at Windle and Moodie. “The major difference between a camel and a normal blonde is the warmth – ask for a buttery blonde. Emphasise that you want an expensive looking blonde with some warmth (but not red!) and take a photo to demonstrate, so that there’s no mistake. Adding warmth can take you from cooler blonde shades all the way to red – be careful to emphasise that you definitely want to stay blonde!”

Best suited to: Natural or bleach blondes

The look: Modern and eclectic, pastelising is perfect for adding depth and interest to fair hair. This autumn opt for pastel pieces placed throughout the hair, rather than an all-over wash.

What to ask for: “Keep on trend with an infusion of different tones such as cotton white, oyster, pearl, chinchilla, tea rose, pewter and sand, shades frequently seen on the Olsen twins” says Christel Lundqvist at HOB Salons. Make sure to channel Ashley and Mary-Kate’s boho style with dishevelled waves to showcase the varying shades.

High Maintenance? 1/5 The pastel colours are semi-permanent so they are low commitment and will wash out faster than they grow out.

Best suited to: Brunettes as you can gradually go lighter towards the ends. Blondes might want to reverse the look with darker ends.

The look: Grown-out roots and highlighted ends are still going strong for the new season. Drew Barrymore has been flaunting the look lately.

What to ask for: Book in at Toni & Guy for the new Diamond Crest technique. A dark colour is used at the roots and drifts through the hair getting lighter towards the ends. Natural shades are utilised so a deep chocolate crest will start at the roots blending into hazelnut, then caramel and finally honey at the ends. “It should be worn very tousled and textured for a more grungy feel” explains Lynsey Ashton, International Technical Director who invented the technique.

Best suited to: Red Heads and Brunettes

The look: Rich, glossy hair that flashes with a bold, gem tones. This is a real statement look and will breathe life into your hair. Think of Cheryl’s brush with burgundy – she was ahead of the curve; while Katy Perry’s new “do” is an extreme version of the look, we recommend working with subtler tones for everyday.
What to ask for: “Ask for an all over colour, preferably a dark base with a hint of blue or violet to make it appear deeper and glossier. You can also add a flash of burgundy or amethyst purple to add interest to the hair and for extra impact as it moves” says Nikki Sherman Head of Colour at John Carne Hairdressing.
