Healthy Grunge
‘It’s cool-girl hair that has life in the roots and an easy, separated texture’ said hair stylist Eugene Souleiman of the laid-back style he championed at Missoni. To get the look he massaged in Wella Professional’s Ocean Spritz before loosely pinning hair into buns, then shaking them out just before girls stepped onto the runway to create gentle waves. At Emilio Pucci models sported a version of their own naturally tousled hair, just pumped up with mousse to create separation and at Etro hair was beautifully simple and loose with product added at the roots to create extra bulk and soft, natural movement.

Slick hair
At Alberta Ferretti hair stylist Guido Palau saturated hair in Redken’s Vinyl Glam shine spray before pulling it back into tight knots that sat high at the back of the head. At Roberto Cavalli girls marched on with slick buns and straight centre partings to match a sexy collection littered with studded leather. Sleek, minimal side partings at Jil Sander complimented the paired down elegance of the show and at Iceberg hair stylist Stephane Lancien created an ELLE favourite, the ‘bad ballerina bun’ – an off kilter top knot teased into place using Elnett hairspray.

According to Milan's catwalks there are two ways to rock the eighties look this season: slicked back and sexy with shine (think Robert Palmer videos) or with easy, low-maintenance layers. If you opt for a slicked style then you’ll need product - and lots of it. Backstage we watched stylists layer gels, serums and shine sprays on to hair to get the ultimate glass-like veneer. If that’s not your bag, make like a model off-duty and wear your layers long, loose and textured.
