Recently Barack Obama created a media buzz with a simple tweet; Game on. #Shebelieves.
This brilliant initiative, created by the US National Women’s Football Team, was put into play to encourage young women around the world to follow their dreams.
In an open letter posted by the team on U.S. Soccer’s website, it states: “We believe in your dreams, in your goals, and in your ability to reach them. It might be an uphill battle, and you will get knocked down, but it’s your battle. Own it. Fight it. Never give up on it. You got this!” The idea behind the hashtag? For women to share their dreams and goals with each other across social media.
Now it’s our turn. We’re passionate about women in sport, especially those going for their dreams, so we want to remind everyone exactly why we need to get behind team England in the World Cup.
1. For starters, they’ve just advanced to the quarterfinal where they will play against hosts, Canada.
2. Around 90% of televised coverage of sport and 98% of newspaper coverage is men-only, according to the Women in Sport campaign group.
3. The recognition for the quality of women’s sport is long overdue.
4. Players like Fara Williams have accrued over 100 appearances for England.
5. But most of all, they’re a team of 23 strong, inspirational women representing all corners of England.
