You know those people who jump out of bed every morning ready for the day? They have that bounce in their step from around 7:30am when they naturally wake up becasue their body clocks are, well, amazing? That's not me.

Without fail every morning I wake up - make that, struggle to open my eyelids for ten minutes - in what can only be described as a foul mood. Mornings and I don't get along. But that's all about to change. I've found the secret to becoming a morning perosn and all it takes is a bit of self manipulation, creating a sanctuary and  saying no to instagram before bed.

1. Get more sleep

This is a no brainer, right? But you'd be surprised at how often your head hits the pillow closer to midnight than you'd like. Our bodies need 6-9 hours of sleep each night, so if you have a particular time you want to be awake for in the morning, count backwards and get under those covers.

2. Create the right environment

Watching Netflix, eating, drinking and sleeping in your bed is a big no no. There's a strong association in people's minds between sleep and the bedroom but if you add your daily activities to the mix, you weaken that association. When you wake up, get out of your bedroom as soon as possible. Walk to the kitchen for a glass of water to break the cycle of lying in bed checking twitter.

3. Wind down to wind up

Our bodies need time to relax.  Meditation is the number one way to relieve stress and relax muscles. Before bed, aim to have a hot bath, drink a soothing tea or simply take a moment to focus on your breathing. "A bedtime ritual teaches the brain to become familiar with sleep times and wake times,” says Jessica Alexander of The Sleep Council. “It programmes the brain and internal body clock to get used to a set routine.”

4. No screens before bed

Exposure to blue light before you go to bed significantly affects your sleep quality, because it prevents your body from releasing melatonin, a chemical in your body that helps you sleep. Try to not look at your phone for at least an hour before shut eye.

5. Wake up naturally

Then Lumie Bodyclock Iris, £160 combines the benefits of a gradual sunset and sunrise with aromatherapy. When you're drifting off to sleep, the light dims itself until it's completely dark while releasing a calming scent of lavendar oil, then in the morning the light brightens itself while releasing the scent of a lemon oil to awaken your senses.

6. Don't worry be appy

When our Rapid Eye Movement (REM) cycle is distrupted, we wake up groggy. Our deepest sleep usually lasts between 70 and 90 minutes, so it's best to wake up during the beginning stages. With Sleep Time, you can set an alarm and it will pick up on your frequency waves of sleep and only sound a (calming) alarm when it knows you are no longer in a the deep stage of a REM cycle.
