Today marks the kick-off to the first ever UK Women’s Sports Week, a campaign created by Women in Sport to increase gender equality at every level of the game — from your local tennis courts to the board room of your favourite professional team.

It's about promoting health and confidence on an individual level, but also about making the world of sports a more welcoming place for women as a whole.

'Women everywhere can really benefit from being active – joining together and getting fitter and healthier can be so good for both your health and wellbeing,' says Jessica Ennis-Hill, one of the supporters of the event.

'Sport has really shaped who I am and I cannot overstate the positive outcomes that result from participating in sporting activity. We need to make sport very accessible, welcoming and non-threatening.  And above all, make it a really positive experience.'

Visit the Women In Sport website for more information of what to expect in the week ahead and join the conversation on social media using the hashtag #WSW2015.
