How much moisturiser do you apply every day? How about sunscreen? Is it a haphazard application that you simply slather onto the patches you can see? How do you know when's it's enough or too little?

Here at ELLE HQ we have those frugal souls who have made their luxury anti-ageing cream last for up to nine months through careful dosage, then there are those who get through bottles upon bottles but like our supplements and even paracetamol, the right dosage is key.

Knowing this, we got in touch with Sally Penford, Education Manager at the International Dermal Institute, who told us exactly how much of each product we should be using - we think you’ll be surprised... 

Creamy = 10p piece size, gel = 5p piece size

'This is assuming that the cleanser is applied to damp skin for easy spreading or foaming’ says Penford. 

Two to three spritzes to cover the face and throat. If it’s in a pouring bottle, apply a 20p piece size to a cotton wool pad and sweep over the face. 

Six-10 drops is all that’s needed to cover the face, neck and décolleté.

Use a rice grain sized amount of cream per eye.

‘Generally a pea size amount,’ says Penford. ‘Apply to damp skin spritzed with a hydrating toner to ensure better spreading of the moisturiser,’ she adds.
