Dewy skin may be the look du jour right now, but not everyone wants to follow the catwalk trends verbatim. For those of you who prefer a classic matte coverage that hides imperfections, then a fuller foundation is the right choice. Just remember, while it is great to cover blemishes you don’t want to look washed out, build up layers of these heavier foundations gradually for a flawless and flattering look.

Double Wear SPF 10, £24.50 by Estee Lauder
Skin Type: All, but it's oil free so great for combination skin / No of shades: 19

This foundation blends well and fixes in place for a satin finish. It definitely has staying power; touch-ups will be a thing of the past. You won’t get any depth with this foundation though, if that’s a look you want - be prepared to highlight and contour separately.

Teint Idole SPF 16, £24 by Lancome
Skin Type: Combination / No of Shades: 6

This water based foundation is refreshing on the skin, but don’t be fooled by the light texture, it gives serious coverage. Teint Idole also works hard to improve your own skin by smoothing and fading imperfections, rather than just working as a cover up. The only downside? There are just 6 shades, so finding your perfect match could be tricky. Out in March.

Skin Type: All / No of Shades: 10House of Fraser

This foundation is high in pigment but not heavy on the skin. It is surprisingly lightweight and soft on contact. Light reflecting particles give a flattering finish. Don’t expect added skincare benefits; this foundation is purely about great make-up.

Silk Crème Foundation, £32 by Laura Mercier at Space NK
Skin Type: All but ideal for people with rosacea or heavy pigmentation / No of shades: 10
Beauty editors rave about Laura’s Tinted Moisturiser and I’m a big fan of this Silk Crème foundation because it is a great option for anyone with less than perfect skin. It has the highest coverage of any of the brand’s bases, but the light-diffusing particles mean skin still has a flattering glow. Plus, those magic particles work to soften the look of fine lines and wrinkles too.

Even Better SPF 15, £20 by Clinique
Skin Type: Normal to Combination-oily / No of Shades: 14
Part of the Even Better skincare range (which we love), this foundation carries the benefits of the skincare range into your make-up routine. This foundation works to improve your skintone, while SPF prevents further pigmentation. Coverage is heavy so apply with care.

Classic Flawless Finish SPF 8, £45, by Le Metier de Beaute at Liberty
Skin Type: All / No of Shades: 12
Le Metier’s Classic foundation covers the skin perfectly without looking too heavy. The consistency is thick but easy to blend and build-up; it feels comfortable on the skin. Containing Vitamin A and E, along with UVA and UVB protection, this is a great foundation for day and night.
