It’s the workout that can burn a lot of fat and boost your cardio fitness through buckets of sweat and leave you in a heap next to your bike. Spin is epic if you put your glutes into it with an endorphin hit like no other. Team ELLEFit took on one of the newest spin classes in town to see what it had to offer.

TotalCycle is a new class at The Third Space and offers 45 minutes of spin to great music. We loved it.

If you’re new to spin or a committed junkie, there are hacks we can all use to maximize the benefits and enjoyment. We spoke to the instructor Tanya to find out more.

What should I expect?

Spin is a low impact exercise so is easy on your joints. It’s an enjoyable way to get in some cardio, the instructor will make it easy to follow and motivate you throughout the class.

What shall I do if I’m a beginner?

Choose the spin classes with a dance element, it’s fun to get weights involved, giving you a full body workout and it breaks the session up so your legs have break.

What are common mistakes you see in spin classes?

Technique. People haven’t always been taught the right posture and positioning to get the best workout for your legs and stomach. Ensure your weight is back as you hover you bottom over the seat. This will give your glutes the best workout! Make sure you set your bike up correctly, or ask a member of staff, you are looking for the seat to be waist height, when you are standing.

How does a spin class translate into outdoor cycling?

The variety in a cycle class from rides with hill climbs and faster sections to total body cycling which uses arm movement and weights to tone the whole body so all classes will improve fitness and efficiency to cycle on the road.

What would you recommend to eat pre-class?

Nothing heavy for at least an hour to an hour and a half before the class.

If your class is in the early morning make sure you have a good dinner the night before, and depending on how you feel, either a light breakfast or do it on an empty stomach. If this class is at lunchtime ensure that you have had a good hearty breakfast and a light snack such as banana, nuts or peanut butter on toast. If the class is in the evening ensure that you have had a good lunch of carbs and protein so you can burn more calories.

What is the best time of day to do a spin class?

There is always a good time to spin! It doesn’t matter what time of day you want to jump on a bike, as long as you do it.

How long until you see results?

You would see a difference after 4- 6 weeks if you train 3 times a week you will be leaner, feel fitter and see your legs more toned.
