Stars including Chloe Sevigny , Drew Barrymore and Maggie Gyllenhaal swapped a classic red for a berry pink lip. The look nodded to old Hollywood’s classic look but had a younger feel.
One star who kept with the classic look was Cameron Diaz . Make-up artist Robin Fredriksz for Chanel told Splendicity.com that he paired a “classic Chanel mouth with a golden sunny California eye” proving a red lip can look modern as long as you ditch the black liner. (Robin used Chanel’s Precision Eye Definer in Khaki Dore, FYI).
Jennifer Garner also opted for Chanel, her lip colour of choice was Chanel Rouge Coco in Rouge Orage, an intense rose with an uplifting bronze shimmer; again, creating a quirky take on the classic post-box red.
Moving on to the hair; the big looks of the night were demure off-the-face updos (Marion Cotillard , Chloe Sevigny), big curls (Fergie, Julia Roberts) and undone updos (Sandra Bullock, Calista Flockhart, Kate Winslet ).
For us, the undone updos were the most exciting. ELLE spotted this as a big summer trend on the catwalks back in September. Now the look has gone stellar, by going from runway to red carpet. Stars like Kristen Bell, Kate Hudson and Anna Paquin swapped fussy party hair for styles more suited to a walk in the park. The result? Fresh and cool, yet still elegant. The effortless hairstyles helped dress down flashy gowns and picture perfect make-up.
Hair accessories were also spotted. January Jones wore a chic black ribbon as a hairband (one of our favourite looks of the night), while Carey Mulligan and Rose Byrne went for crystal hair pieces.
"Hair accessories and adornments are a big trend right now and we are seeing it on the runways in fashion shows and on red carpets," hair stylist Mark Townsend, who created January’s updo, told Stylelist.com.
While, Marion Cotillard’s quiffed updo was adorned at the back with $150,000 worth of Chopard hair pins, thanks to hairstylist Robert Vetica. He also used Morrocanoil before blow drying; a product we have been championing for a while now – and it’s a lot cheaper than the Chopard hair pins.
