It’s out today – the Brad Pitt Chanel commercial that everyone has been holding their breath for. The first time in the brand’s history that a male star has been chosen to front the fragrance for – and, the latest in a long line of overblown, glamorous ads starring the likes of Nicole Kidman and Audrey Tautou that anticipation was high to say the least.

And the finished piece? Well, it’s understated to say the least. Shot in black and white, a thoughtful Brad gives a monologue to camera in the Shakespearean tradition.

‘It’s not a journey. Every journey ends, but we go on. The world turns and we turn with it. Plans disappear, dreams take over. But wherever I go, there you are. My luck, my fate, my fortune. Chanel No5. Inevitable.’

Food for thought, indeed Mr Pitt. The ad is the first to be revealed in a series, created by Joe Wright and Sam Taylor-Johnson. The reason that the Chanel tapped Pitt? According to Andrea d’Avack, president of Chanel Fragrance and Beauty; 'To keep a legend fresh, you always have to change its point of view.'
