Forget make-up, it was all about the hair at the 2012 Golden Globes.
Apart from a smattering of bold lips (thank you Angelina, Clare Danes, Sofia Vergara and Dianna Agron), and a few smoky eyes (from Lea Michele, Evan Rachel Wood, Rooney Mara, Nicole Richie and Emma Stone) the focus was really on the hair (and the dresses of course).
Most popular was the up-do which came in all shapes and sizes. Charlize wore her hair beautifully tousled into a low-slung side bun to match the romance of her Dior Couture gown. It was a look that both Emma Stone and Jessica Alba flaunted too, but in a slightly sleeker, rather than romantically tousled, way. Other buns were seen on Angelina Jolie who went for a sleek, twisted ballet bun; Kelly Osbourne and Clare Danes.
Nicole Richie opted for what looked like a ponytail, but from the back hair stylist Jenny Cho had twisted and pinned the hair underneath leaving the hair on top loose for a more futuristic effect which suited her metallic Julien Macdonald dress to a tee.
Glee co-stars Dianna Agron and Lea Michele chose tousled up-dos; natural and easy they juxtaposed their elaborate gowns. While at the other end of the spectrum Mila Kunis swapped her usually tousled tresses for a sleek up-do, a look that Rooney Mara adopted too.
Up-dos may have won the award for most popular hairstyle but there were some stars championing the simplicity of a well styled down-do. Jessica Biel, Reese Witherspoon, Salma Hayek and Madonna all chose loose waves; we loved Reese Witherspoon’s sexy, bed head waves. Stars who chose a sleek, straight look included Sofia Vergara, Frieda Pinto, Heidi Klum and Livia Guiggioli.
It’s only the first awards ceremony of 2012 but hair accessories are lagging behind. The stars to wear look-at-me hair accessories were Charlize Theron and Michelle Williams – coincidentally they both chose wide, jewelled hairbands.
With such a selection of beautiful hairstyles it’s tricky to choose favourites, but Charlize Theron for the sheer romanticism and Reese Witherspoon for sex appeal win for us. But what do you think - which hairstyles are your favourites…?
