Using a sunbed for the first time before the age of 35 increases the risk of malignant melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, by 75 per cent. This type of cancer is the second most common amongst 15-34 year olds making it a real concern.

Shows like The Only Way is Essex and the new series of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding have been championing this dangerous habit. Which is why we’re pleased to hear that, as part of Cancer Research UK’s new campaign R UV UGLY?, the directors at leading model agencies including Storm, Elite, Models 1 and Premier Model Management, who have big names like Lily Donaldson, Crystal Renn and Bar Refaeli on its books have all agreed on a zero tolerance policy on sunbed use for all models on its books or those wishing to join.

Sarah Doukas, Managing Director of Storm Model Management, says, ‘We do not advocate the use of sunbeds for any of our models, and recommend that they choose safer options if they require a tan – spray tans are easy to apply and can last a week.’

As part of the campaign Cancer Research UK has teamed up with sk:n to offer you two free skin assessments (they normally cost £25 each) from now until the end of February 2012. Make sure you take up this offer; it could just save your life.
