Everyone from Penelope Cruz and Rachel McAdams to Maggie Gyllenhaal and Sarah Jessica Parker opted for a bun. However it wasn’t a sea of identikit updos, each star made the look their own.
Frederic Fekkai's Renato Campora created Kristen Stewart’s messy bun, which worked perfectly with her personality. He told Bella Sugar.com that he wanted to create a "modern, edgy look with a young vibe." It was also a slightly more classic look then her mullet would have been. Good work Renato.
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s hair was styled for the event by Mark Townsend . The look was slightly mussed up and had a vintage feel thanks to the specially designed barrette by Jennifer Behr .
Actress and singer, Jennifer Lopez also went for a tousled updo thanks to stylist Robert Vetica . The hairstyle looks like a bun, but is instead two pinned ponytails. Vetica created texture using Moroccanoil’s Hydrating styling Cream and a curling iron.
But it was SJP who really caught our attention. She told E! Online’s Ryan Seacrest she still gets excited about dressing up, "I still do. I kid you not, the novelty has not worn off for me one bit." And she definitely put the effort in with her sculptural updo. It’s a work of art. The intricately woven bun, resembling a flower, was the most derisive hairstyle of the night, garnering many positive and negative comments. In the words of Carrie Bradshaw, “I will never be the woman with the perfect hair” but team ELLE think Sarah’s got pretty close.
Those who avoided the bun were Sandra Bullock , Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet who created their own mini trend: asymmetric hair. They all chose to wear their hair with a low side parting, one side pushed to the front and the other behind the shoulder. Cameron went for the most body, while Sandra had the slightest whisper of a curl in the ends.
In the make-up department the stars appeared to be inspired by the sea of nude, silver and muted gold dresses they chose for the event, almost everyone went for downplayed nude hues. Pale lips and loaded lashes was the beauty combo of the night. The winner of this look was a star who wasn’t even on the red carpet. Our very own Victoria Beckham , who made an appearance at Elton John’s AIDS Foundation Academy Award Party. She paired her own design dress with smoky eyes, pale nude lips and of course, a bun, which was much softer than the severe hairstyles VB often sports. Let's hope this winning look is here to stay.
The exceptions to the rule? Maggie Gyllenhaal with a hot pink lip; Chanel make-up artist Robin Fredrikzs used Chanel Rouge Coco lipstick in Gabrielle to create a true red lip shade for Cameron Diaz, while Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock stepped out in an Oscar worthy fuchsia lip, which was applied by Chanel make-up artist Angela Levin (she used Chanel Rouge Coco Lip Colour in Paris, FYI). It's no surprise both stars were flaunting lipstick on the red carpet, after all Chanel have declared 2010 "the year of the lipstick" .
