There have been whispers in the beauty world for a while that the darker tan is making a comeback. And now it’s official. After almost 18 months of the no tan-tan trend, the subtle look is starting to wane and in its place the unapologetic deep, dark tan is back.
We first spotted Alexa Chung on Friday at a party hosted by Christopher Kane and Donatella Versace (who always favours a darker shade of bronze), with an unusually dark skin tone. Miss Chung normally champions the effortless I-just-rolled-out-of-bed-and-look-this-good look and fake tan definitely doesn’t fall under that style umbrella. Maybe it was an ode to Donatella? But no, she kept the tan on for the Met Ball, although she did cover up in a 3.1 Phillip Lim tux.
Also at the Met Ball and proudly showing off her deeply bronzed limbs was Blake Lively, whose fake tan was a perfect, olive shade. Not a hint of telltale orange in sight. Chloe Sevigny also showed off a dark wash of colour in her Proenza Schouler mini dress. Both ladies wore aqua mini dresses; maybe the summer trend is tan and turquoise?
If you need more convincing that the tan is back, both Xen Tan and St Tropez have launched darker products for this summer. Xen Tan’s Dark Lotion Absolute Luxe, £34.99 is in stores so you can get the look at home; while St Tropez’s new spray tan, the Dark Mist Tan, £30 is available in salons now, great if you don’t trust yourself with this darker shade.
