Exercise

by Amy Lawrenson

Exercise is not just about losing weight and getting into those skinny jeans - although this can be a great motivator - regular exercise can also reduce premature ageing, add years to your life expectancy, decrease your risk of heart disease and high blood pressure and lower your body fat and bad cholesterol. There are also many short term benefits which can help to keep you motivated. Working out can boost your mood and your immune system, reduce mental and muscular tension and increase your ability to concentrate. Plus, lets not forget, stick with it and it should help you loose weight and get you the body you always wanted.

Exercise can be cardiovascular (raises the heart rate and burns calories) or use weight resistance (tones, builds and strengthens muscle). For most of us, combining both regularly is key. So whether you're after a fun and social way to workout (this does exist) or a results driven regime, read all about the newest, most effective ways we've found to get fit and stay in shape below.

Traditional Pilates

by Joseph Pilates

Pilates is a series of gentle, muscle strengthening exercises that was devised in the 1920s by Dr Joseph Pilates as a way to rehabilitate injured World War I soldiers and patients with back and posture problems.
It was based on principles that work to improve flexibility and strength and to create balance and well being in the body through breathing and physical functions that lead to physical and mental relaxation.

Although Pilates wasn’t really accepted in the medical community till around 50 years later – it is now widely regarded as one of the most effective regimes for back and posture pr...

Power Plates

by Good Vibes Fitness

Price: £20 for a 30 minute class
Stockist: Good Vibes Fitness

Power plate workouts have grown in popularity over the last few years as they are quick, convenient and known to deliver good results with relatively little effort in a short amount of time.
The power plate machine is a sturdy vibrating plate with handle bars. A series of exercises are carried out on the plate and the body is forced to use more muscle power to stabilize itself and hold the position while the machine vibrates forcefully.
Exercises vary from warm up and down stretches to thigh, arm and stomach toners for all over results.  Each position is held for 60 seconds and so muscles contract up to 50 times more than they would without the plate and the body tones up in super-fast time.
Take three, 30 minute sessions a week for six weeks and you should see love handles disappear and a flatter stomach revealed, plus strengthening and toning that would normally take heaps of time and effort is achieved in a fraction of the time.
As there’s no cardio work involved you’re unlikely to break a sweat which means power plates are the perfect way to work out at lunchtime, or easy sessions to squeeze in around your work and social diary. However this means if you want to lose weight and keep your heart healthy too you should alternate with cardio exercise like jogging, swimming or spinning.
Best for: slimming and toning

British Military Fitness

Military Work Out

by British Military Fitness

Price: First class is free. One class per week, £35 per month, unlimited classes, £46 per month.

As its name would suggest the British Military Fitness class is not for the faint hearted, but anyone with a dogged approach to fitness or a determination to get trim fast should sign themselves up pronto.
Workouts take place -whatever the weather - in local parks around the country with class sizes varying depending on take up. The bigger classes (there can be over 50 people) are then split into smaller groups according to ability (this is a good time to look feeble!) with separate instructors, literally like army regiments. You’re even given a vest with a number so instructors can shout at you. And shout at you they do.  All the classics like ‘you’re a number not a name!', ‘keep up the pace - work harder’ and ‘no hands on hips’ come thick and fast throughout the class and the humiliation of lagging behind is incentive enough to keep up the tempo for the whole hour. Squats, press ups and sit ups are all combined with relay runs and sprinting and there’s absolutely no resting or copping out so if you sign up to three classes a week you should see extreme results in just one month.
We particularly love this Military Boot camp class as come rain, hail or snow the classes take place and so this is a great way for women to exercise safely throughout the dark winter months. Military Boot camp is in a park near you every week.
Best for: people who need motivation

Beautcamp Pilates

Beautcamp Pilates

by Beautcamp Pilates

Price: Off peak single classes cost £23 and peak evening classes cost £25
Stockist: Beautcamp Pilates

Introduced to the UK from LA by pilates pro Dominique Day, Beautcamp Pilaties has a celebrity following that includes super toned stars like Jennifer Aniston and Madonna. There are now two studios in London you can sign up to and the class is growing in popularity.
Not for the faint hearted, anyone who thinks Pilates is for wimps - one of those fitness classes for people who like to buy nice gym gear but don’t want to break a sweat - should sign up for Beautcamp and prepare to be converted.
After one or two classes in the City branch studio with Pilates maestro Daniel Le Roux you’ll either be hooked or unable to walk without yelping, and quite possibly both. Like traditional Pilates ( link to definition), Beautcamp focuses on precise stretches and core strengthening routines, but by combining these with resistance and weights, aims to sculpt your entire body with carefully planned hour long and gruelling workouts.
Lunges, squats, sit-ups etc are all performed in repetitive sets on a bed called ‘the reformer’ which works with resistance ropes and weights. There’s no breaks, no rests and with classes a maximum size of nine -  no copping out.
Classes aren’t cheap but this really is the ultimate and one of the most effective ways we’ve found to a toned body – which is why it’s so popular in Hollywood. Go three times a week and after a month you’ll see a visible change. Stick with it to get the abs you always wanted.
Best for: Toning
