Best for: Achieving a tan that matches your skin colour
After opening the bottle my first thoughts were ‘at last a fake tan that doesn’t smell like biscuits!’ it had a distinctive perfume smell that made a change to other self-tanners that I had used in the past. The orange gel was very easy to apply and absorbed into the skin quickly and evenly. The colour starts to develop after a couple of hours creating a radiant sunkissed effect without turning orange.

Best for: Darker skin tones
Dave’s tanning mousse is really easy to apply. It comes out as a whippy mousse but when it is smoothed over the skin it turns into a thin lotion – making this super easy to blend. Colour is instant but also develops nicely over a few hours. This is a dark tan, so should be avoided by the porcelain of skinned.

This brand is new into the UK but it has been a sell-out over the pond and I can see why. The spray mist is the lightest I’ve ever experienced. It certainly doesn’t need any rubbing in and it can spray at all angles making your back easy to cover. Be sure to spray it in the bath because it’s so fine you don’t realize that it’s covering everything in a 2ft radius. The tan literally took two minutes to dry, meaning I could be dressed and out the door in no time. After a few hours I was a nice chesnut shade, and no, it doesn’t smell of biscuits.

Best for: People with little time on their hands.
I love fake tan, but it always goes patchy whether I exfoliate or not. That was until I tried Clinique’s Body Airbrush Spray. Really easy to apply, it’s ultra-fine and sprays from any angle in a continuous spray. My tan developed in about an hour and after 24hrs it had built up to a golden, gorgeous looking tan. This is definitely the best self tanner I’ve ever tried.

Best for: A chic shade
Shiseido’s Quick self tanning Gel is ultra easy to apply and I was completely streak free which rarely happens when I self tan. Its gel formula was really moisturising and it dried fast so there were no unwanted stains on my bed sheets or pyjamas. Even hands my hands were stain free – remarkable considering how fast the gel dries.
The tan is really natural and lasted three days before I needed to top up.

Garnier’s dry body mist is so quick and easy, I tanned my whole body in less than a minute – making this a miracle for anyone with little time on their hands. It dried almost instantly and my skin didn’t feeling sticky or tight, like it has with other tanners I’ve tried.
The bronzer developed after around 3 hours and there were no streaks or patchiness. I found the colour was even and quite sheer which is perfect if you just want a hint of tan, for medium coverage I needed a few coats. It had a pleasant apricot aroma and the biscuit smell was minimal.
