These days wash off tanners are water and sweat resistant and will give you a perfect tan for over 24 hours – or until you shower.
Price: £11
Best for: Easy application and subtle colour
I generally avoid wash off tanners for fear of ending up with streaky legs, but L’Oreal’s Sublime instant tanner has converted me. It glides on with ease, gives a natural colour and is water resistant – sounds perfect? It is. It lasted a whole day at a BBQ and into the evening, my legs still looked perfect come home time.

Best for: a summer glow
At first glance this tanner looks like it will be all shimmer and no tan, but once rubbed in liberally; it gives a surprisingly deep colour. In fact, it made my pasty, sun-starved legs look like they’d been on a tropical beach for a week. Because it has sheen, this would be a good tanner to add depth to a flat-looking fake tan, or to enhance a natural tan post-holiday. The only downside is that it isn’t water resistant.

Best for: wearing during the day, achieving a quick, medium tan.
Vita Liberata’s 24ct body tint is deep bronze with tiny flecks of gold. It dried really quickly, so I found it easiest to use small amounts at a time and to blend carefully. It had a sweet watermelon scent, which was nice and refreshing. It gave my skin a medium bronze look and the shimmer was very subtle and wearable giving my tan depth and dimension. My tan stayed fixed in place until I showered the next day and it left my skin feeling firm, without any stickiness.
