Model Nyakim Gatwech had an excellent response for an Uber driver who asked her if she'd ever bleach her Sudanese skin.

'I couldn't even respond I started laughing so hard,' she wrote on Instagram.

'Then he said, "So, is that a no?" and I said, "Hell to the f**king yeah. that's a no". Why on earth would I ever bleach this beautiful melanin? God bless me.'

The 24-year-old has attracted 182,000 Instagram followers after using the social media platform to challenge perceptions of beauty.

Her inspiring posts serve as a reminder that black women are beautiful. Often using the hashtag #melaninmonday, she calls herself 'Queen of the Dark' - a nickname first given by her fans.

Gatwech also shares poems about black beauty and confidence.

'That look you give them when they try to tell you that you are pretty for black girl… like please,' she wrote in another post.

'Black girls are everything, black itself is everything – [it] is not the colour or sadness or death black is the colours [of] brave, strong black is the colour of me.'

Diversity in fashion is improving, although there is still a long way to go.

A report compiled by The Fashion Spot looked at 241 fashion shows in February and March this year and found that 27.9 percent of the models who walked those catwalks were minorities - the highest number recorded since The Fashion Spot began tracking the data two and a half years ago.

Change is slow but happening.
