At this time of year skin tends to look lacklustre and a bit meh. So here are my top tips to getting a clear complexion and dewy finish that looks natural.

The full-coverage Vichy Dermablend, £15.50 (boots.com) foundation I usually use feels a bit heavy, even though you would think during the depths of winter it would be exactly what my skin is crying out for. So today I applied my make-up more strategically just using the Dermablend (the best base for covering blemishes I've ever used, by the way) on the areas that needed it, rather than all over. Being more strategic with make-up is definitely my top tip for the day.

Next, I used Clinique Line Smoothing Concealer, £15 (clinique.co.uk). I find a lot of liquid concealers are far too loose to cover anything which is completely pointless. This smoothes on with little effort and is packed with pigment to cover blemishes and redness. It's thicker because it claims to smooth lines, working a bit like polyfiller for skin! It also has an illuminating quality - ideal for under eye bags. I can't rave about this product enough, if you like the sound of it head to a Clinique counter where you can try before you buy.

Last, I am hooked on Smashbox Halo Highlighting Wand in Pearl, £29 (debenhams.com). The formula is creamy and pearlescent, rather than overly sparkly. Used strategically on high points like the brow bones, cheek bones, bridge of the nose, cupid’s bow and a little on the chin. This gives skin a dewy finish that looks really natural like pretty perspiration (yes, I think there really is such a thing!). Be warned though, use the back of your hand as a palette - one click of the ‘pen' releases enough product to highlight your whole face, so go lightly...
