From hair bloggers to the catwalk, there's an appetite for colour, and deciding to add some blonde to your natural hair is a fun way to make your curls pop a bit more.
However, if you've spent time and energy hydrating your curls, you might fear the drying effect that bleach can bring. That's why we've spoken to Jess Patching a colourist at salon Vixen and Blush for her top tips in how to dye, care for and maintain bleach blonde natural hair.
Tip 1: If you're aiming to get the look, visit a salon you trust.
Tip 2: Since Afro hair absorbs a lot of product it needs a good amount of colour to be applied and emulsified (worked through the hair).

Tip 3: Afro hair types generally has a dense texture so if you're starting with dip dye effect to ease you into the look-a more random and softer application of product is better so that no harsh lines are apparent. Apply the colour visually and creatively.
Tip 4: Watch out for the orange effect. Afro hair types are usually dark in colour and hold a lot of warm pigments. Warmer pigments are exposed when hair is lightened. We would recommend the use of an Ash toner to counteract any warmer tones.
Tip 5: After care Hair that is lightened may feel dry afterwards as the cuticle has been opened during the lightening process. We would recommend lots of leave-in conditioning treatments (opt for products without sulphate, which is drying), masks and oils to keep your hair in good condition. When you towl dry the hair, massage the oil all the way through the hair into the cuticles.
