Like many other London designers this Fashion Week, two strong themes informed Marios Schwab’s latest collection for spring - block proportion and texture and a romantic pastel palette. In Schwab’s case, the designer has been studying old fashioned flip books (remember the cardboard books you used to play with as a child that are divided in to three sections - top middle and legs), and mixing and matching was central to his designs. Tops and jackets cropped under the bust, long linear mid-thigh length tunics and mid-calf length skirts all drew lines across the body in Schwab’s layering master class. There were shrunken cropped jackets in linen and stiff organza and tunics, skirts and trousers in metallic silk and pastel chiffons, each purposely fine enough to reveal the colour and texture of the layer underneath.
Smatterings of pretty sequins could also be seen shining through gauzy light layers in what was a definite departure for Schwab whose previous seasons’ collections focused on a severe second skin silhouette. Whatever the inspiration- the new romantic mood suited him - a stand out collection.
