And we waited for the first model to take the runway at Chanel's spring/summer 2010 show. Except that there was no runway. Instead, there was a charming pastoral scene, wooden boards, a flower-decorated barn, piles of straw, hessian-covered benches stamped with the iconic CC logo and a grassy path trodden through it all. If there were a prize for the season's most brilliantly executed presentation, this would have won. In fact, the early morning hoedown laid on by Karl Lagerfeld might just have been the most entertaining spectacle the jaded fashion pack had ever seen in Paris. But to dismiss it all as a romp in the hay would be to do the designer a great disservice. This was also one of the best Chanel collections of recent years literally, like watching a master at work (meanwhile also marvelling at the pneumatic Lara Stone dressed as a milkmaid, rolling around with Freja and some nubile young boy toy). Did we mention that campaign girl Lily Allen performed live, rising out of the floor on a wooden platform to sing Not Fair while chiffon eveningwear wafted around her? If not, it's understandable: there was just so much to see. The clothes were Chanel at its finest, young, light and flirtatious, respectful of House codes while bringing modernity to the mix. The attitude was nothing short of barnstorming. If only all fashion shows were like this.
