Marques’Almeida make their first exploration into eveningwear. And we like it.

If the girls of East London’s Kingsland Road were headed to a red carpet event, they’d be wearing Marques’Almeida. Taking their first exploration into eveningwear, the Portuguese design duo today presented their best collection to date. The Marques’Almeida signature slash-and-fray still applies, only this season Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida have refined their grungy style resulting in neater lines, tighter tailoring and more feminine silhouettes. Billowing wide trousers, sheepskin shawls over silk tops, and mid-length billowing full skirts in burnt orange raw silk were just a few of the highlights. Even their trademark frayed denim took a more evening turn, with skinny jeans frayed and extended to imitate the train of a ball gown. Think Courtney and Kurt at VMAs circa 1993 and you’ll get the idea. But fear not die-hard, East London fans, the signature denim is ever-present, only this time it’s multi-layered, patched, and in camo. Autumn winter 2013 also sees the Central Saint Martins graduates make their biggest venture into fabrics, as they take on luxury materials dyed to perfection. Think deepest, darkest navy ponyskin pencil skirts, burgundy ponyskin biker jackets, raw silk trouser suits and sheepskin shawls draped over silk dresses. Once again, Marques’Almeida have proven why London is the hub of young design talent…
