It’s hard not to fall in love with Thakoon Panichgul.

There’s nothing complicated in his collections, little unnecessary drama or things that might prove difficult for an average girl to wear. Or indeed, Michelle Obama. Instead, this young designer is defining an easy, breezy and very cool femininity. It’s retail-friendly, of course, but that doesn’t mean boring on the catwalk, as this spring/summer 2010 collection showed. Gentle plissé pleats, layered and clashing prints and his signature soft bondage detailing were the key themes, usually combined into one great dress. There were kimono shapes, open backs and romantic falls of fabric from corset bodices, most memorably in a pretty blush shade that’s an early emerging trend for the season.
