"My style is a lot more relaxed nowadays.
I think you can see that in these clothes". Wearing a short grey jersey dress with shiny nude stilettos, a charming and chatty Victoria Beckham presented her AW10 collection personally in New York on Sunday morning.
Taking over the Park Avenue mansion that was the set for Carrie and Mr Big's apartment in Sex & The City, the designer put on an intimate salon-style show that should finally silence her critics. With models wearing sunglasses from her range ("I'm feeling very nerdy chic right now") and shoes designed to her brief by Brian Atwood, Victoria talked through each piece of her fourth dress collection to a select group of international press.
"This time I really pushed myself" she said, "It's much more sophisticated and daring". Claiming inspiration from early era Hollywood and 1940s femme fatales - "this is the dress I'm going to wear to the Oscars!" she exclaimed, about one glorious floor-length gown. It was a compelling and polished performance.
Victoria has established a design style now: sexy in a ladylike sort of way, beautifully cut and considered. These dresses were the best version of that yet. A black strapless number had an internal corset, clever draping over the skirt and roughly cut edges: perfect for any red carpet. "This is where elegance crosses over with modernity", she explained, looking quietly pleased by the response. If you had any doubts about Victoria Beckham's future in fashion, forget them now. Judging by this collection, she's in it for the long haul.
