Fierce knitwear might sound like a contradiction in terms, but that is exactly what 28 year old Mark Fast specializes in – or as he puts it, an aesthetic that is ‘a mixture of beauty and severity.’ Fast moved from his home in rural Canada to London to study at Central St Martins (it was there that his tutor steered him in the direction of knitwear) and has called the capital home ever since. His pieces are produced by hand on a domestic knitting machine and he also works with knitting circles in Devon, Scotland and France, which produce different panels that are then sent to the studio to be turned into finished garments. Fast’s designs are lessons in how precision craftsmanship can be extremely sexy. His dresses cling to the body with scooping necklines, while sinuous cut-outs and curved ladder-stitches highlight feminine contours. His high hemlines and silhouettes recall Azzedine Alaia’s body-con brilliance.
