Elie Saab

Just 14 of the 48 looks that Elie Saab showed earlier today were for day – well, make that the cocktail hour - all cut just under the knee and the rest were long, which explains an awful lot about this designer’s couture business. There wasn’t a single jacket, let alone a pair of trousers. But this was Oscar-winning red carpet stuff.

He called it an ‘Ode to Delicateness’ and followed through on that promise with some incredible dresses whose embroideries appeared to float magically across the models’ bodies. So fine was the mesh that suspended them it appeared to have been crafted from cats’ whiskers.

There were gasps from his clients – including Dita Von Teese – particularly when the most subtly-hued gowns stepped out, in ivory, sky blue, nude, mauve and pale rose.

Saab’s bride was a vision of jaw-dropping loveliness. She was almost swallowed up by the million miles of ivory crinoline that had been made from the sheerest baroque floral lace and her matching embroidered tulle veil. That will be one lucky girl who gets to wear it.
