Fact: It’s the season of the jumpsuit, the piece that just won’t go away. It’s everywhere for S/S09: softly tailored at Stella McCartney and Chloe, ballooning into 1980s shapes at Topshop Unique and Proenza Schouler.
The 1980s themselves were key to the sportswear theme. Alexander Wang offered up pastel Miami colours, washed out denim (trend alert!) and body con jersey, while Preen looked to Katherine Hamnett and the London of their teenage years for silhouette and colour stories.
Henry Holland was inspired by the bad taste of ‘80s TV show Beverley Hills 90210 (yet more washed out and distressed denim), while Frida Giannini at Gucci took Hawaiian shirt prints and turned them into the sexiest casualwear imaginable. Watch out for the return of the sporty rucksack too.
