Victoria Beckham - the new face of Marc Jacobs

Victoria Beckham and Marc Jacobs

Has Marc Jacobs finally gone completely bonkers? Or is his latest fashion statement - the announcement that Victoria Beckham is the face of his eponymous label for spring/summer 08 - just another ironic stab at the industry?

Victoria, so often considered the kiss of death for a designer, has been refused the loan of many designer collections, including Christopher Kane and Burberry in the past. So, it's a controversial move for Jacobs, and we suspect he knows it!
The collection Posh will front has already caused much drama. Back in September at New York fashion week not only was the show three hours late (which angered every fashion editor in Manhattan) but the chaotic show featured unfinished garments, underwear as outerwear and accessories that were turned on their head with heels coming out of the side of shoes and purses stuck on the outside of handbags - which many felt were just too crazy to be taken seriously and made a mockery of fashion.

This latest move seems to echo that sentiment. "People are going to think it's very odd", Marc Jacobs said this weekend about the campaign images shot by fashion photographer Juergen Teller. They feature Victoria popping out of gift wrapped boxes and posing by a car with her initials, VB, on the hubcaps. An ironic commentary on the nature of celebrity? A great way to cause another stir within the industry? Or both? Jacob's says it's all because he is fascinated with the Beckhams and the culture of celebrity today, but we think he knows he's being just a little bit naughty. Either way, we're fascinated too and can't wait to see those pictures come spring.

When Karl Lagerfeld brought Chanel's Metiers d'Arts Paris-Londres Collection to London last December it was clear London has influenced Mr Largerfeld.

Now the collection will be guest starring at one of London's hippest fashion stores, Dover Street Market, just for June, and here at ELLE we have had a sneak peak at some of the exclusive gems that will only be going on sale in London at Dover Street Market - including this Union Jack, quilted bag (£835).

But why London? Well, as well as London girls Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse being truly inspirational to Karl Lagerfeld, the collection, he says, ' is at the same time post-modern and romantic. It integrates a delicate punk sophistication and a baroque ambiance.' Just like London!

The Chanel pop-up boutique will be at Dover Street from 9th to 26th June, just long enough to snap up a slice of Chanel, and fashion history.
